BU Defeats Northville in Final Regular Season Home Game

In the final home game of the 2012 regular season, the Birmingham Unified Bulldogs came away with the 11-6 victory over Northville on Wednesday, May 9.

BU came out of the gates strong and captured a 5-1 lead at the end of the first quarter. The fifth goal was scored by junior Adam Susualla with three seconds left in the quarter.

Both teams went back and forth during the second quarter, both scoring two goals, which brought the halftime score to 7-3.

During the second half, BU controlled the tempo and dominated the time of possession, giving them a 11-6 victory in their final home game of the regular season.

Northville, who recently played a very competitive game against perennial state powerhouse Novi Detroit Catholic Central, has proved that they are a good team throughout the season.

Senior captain JD Hess thinks this victory will help them going forth into the playoffs.

“This win was huge because it helps us with our seeding for the playoffs,” Hess said. “I felt like it was our best team game of the year. “

The win brought BU’s record to 7-8 on the season, but the below .500 record does not tell the story of their season.

BU has played several out-of-state games against top-level competition, which has brought their overall record down.

The win against Northville was their final game played at Maple Field, unless they make it to the state championship game, which is played at Seaholm on June 9.

“It was a great feeling [to win the final game at Maple Field],” senior midfielder James Bertrand said.

“Especially knowing that if we want it again, we will have to be at the state championship. And after that win we just had last night, I want it bad.”

Birmingham travels to Columbus, Ohio this weekend to play Shadyside Academy and Franklyn Regional in the Midwest tournament.
