Raving about Rojo
By Julia Wright
Though it’s fairly easy to find a Mexican restaurant in metro Detroit, it’s not necessarily as simple to get great Mexican food. Rojo Mexican Bistro next to 220 Merrill has accomplished just that with their wide selection of Mexican cuisine.
Upon arriving you are greeted by a friendly host and escorted to your table. The decor of Rojo could be described as fun and eye catching with its backlit red columns and Mexican instruments on the walls. Each guest is given personal bowl of mild salsa to eat with the table’s basket of tortilla chips. The bistro holds specials several days of the week including “Taco Tuesday” where all chicken and steak tacos are $1 each all day and “$5 Thursday” where happy hour continues throughout the entire day.
The vast menu is divided into 8 categories: appetizers, soups and salads, rojo tacos, “Soo Mexy”, burritos, quesadillas, fajitas, and “Not So Mex”. Some personal favorites on the menu would include their amazing Queso Fundido, Chicken Tortilla Soup, Scallop Tacos, and their tableside service guacamole, which is adjustable by heat level to personal preference.
Though the re-fried beans I received as a side dish to my tacos looked and tasted like they had been on the plate for several hours, the rest of my meal was superb. The scallops in my scallop tacos were cooked perfectly.
Most nights of the week it is quite easy to sneak in here without any wait, a huge plus. As one of the only mid-priced restaurants in downtown Birmingham and with great service, Rojo is go-to when going out. This is not one to miss!
Rojo Mexican Bistro is open 11 am – 12 pm Monday through Wednesday, 11 am – 1 am Thursday through Saturday, and 11 am – 10 pm on Sunday.
